This unit will focus on Solid liquid separation: Removal of suspended and colloidal particles (Membrane processes will be developed in WP) The principle of solid/liquid separation and the different technologies will be introduced. Fundamentals of flocculation and modelling of settling and filtration will be developed I) Introduction to particles in a water (G. Feuillade) the colloidal particle - surface charge of colloids Attraction and repulsion energies between particles II) Aggregation of colloids (flocculation) (G. Feuillade) III) Technological aspects in coagulation, flocculation, settling and filtration (G. Feuillade) IV) Theoretical aspects of settling and filtration (Julie Mendret, UM2 or C. Cabassud): Basis for dispersed media unit operations: Motion of particles in fluids - Terminal velocity for hindered and non-hindered settling, models of deep bed filtration and of cake filtration - design of filters |
